CHALLENGE & SOLUTIONS
The Building BA6 is a facility housing power converters, electrical switchboards, and cooling equipment used for the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator and the experiments being performed with it. The chillers provided are used to cool down the power converters through air handling units, so the heat generated can be dissipated, ensuring the reliability and the correct functioning of the power supply system.
The main needs for this project were compliance with regulations, energy-efficient solutions, and absolute reliability given the importance of the activities carried out at CERN’s laboratories. For this project, all the aspects mentioned above were addressed using a chiller from the Daikin VZ range of units. The VZ series perfectly met CERN’s needs, thanks to Daikin's In-house designed Inverter Single Screw compressor technology, which can guarantee exceptionally high-efficiency levels. That happens especially when the units are operating at partial loads. Thanks to the inverter, directly integrated into the compressor, the chillers can perfectly match the cooling capacity demand from the facility, which might change based on the workload of the equipment that needs to be cooled down. Besides energy efficiency, the environmental impact aspect was addressed by using a unit with HFO refrigerant R-1234ze, which ensures a GWP value (Global Warming Potential) as low as 7. The newly redesigned single-screw compressor by Daikin stands out for providing outstanding performances despite the compact footprint. That is possible thanks to the new screw profile, which allows the compressor to be perfectly optimized for operations with R-1234ze refrigerant.
