PROJECT

Daikin has recently been involved in the commissioning of a chiller unit EWAT-B – R32 at CERN Building BA7, to meet cooling needs and dissipation of the heat produced by the equipment, used for the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator. For this purpose, CERN decided to replace an old chiller with a new Daikin air-cooled chiller.

CHALLENGE & SOLUTIONS

Among the main needs of the consolidation project, the most relevant are the need for an energy efficiency solution, compliance with regulations, and absolute reliability given the importance of the activities carried out at CERN’s laboratories. Daikin supported the CERN by supplying an R-32 chiller unit with a free cooling option. Thanks to R-32 refrigerant, this solution was the best option, as combines both high efficiency levels and low environmental impact.

The R-32-based Free Cooling improves the overall efficiency because allows the refrigerant to naturally migrate (not mechanically with the use of pumps) to the condenser when certain conditions are met. According to this, the result is an easier installation in a more compact unit footprint. Most importantly, that results in having fewer parts subject to maintenance, which of course, implies lower operative costs.
